Matatiele Heritage Event - Saturday 21 September 2019

Established in 2010 through the inspiration of the Mehloding Trust Co-ordinator, Tsepo Lesholu, as a partnership between Freedom Challenge and Mehloding Trails.

The event covers mountain biking, traditional music and entertainment, horse racing(trotting & fast runner), best dressed jockey and horse competition, traditional food, fashion and traditional attire from women of all different cultures etc.

Main objectives of the event is showcase our rich diversified culture in Matatiele (attire, music, food, dances), re-introduce the indigenous horse racing, encourage youth to participate on mountain biking and the important of rock art site for the coming generation. Local crafters are also given the opportunity to display their work to the many tourists who will be visting our area.

Bookings for the horse race competition and bike competition will be open from the 1 August 2017 to 15 September 2017. No registration fee. Bring your horse or mountain bike and wear traditional attire to be in line for prizes.

Discover the Mehloding Adventure Trail

Located in the relatively unexplored southern Drakensberg, at the junction of the Eastern Cape, Kwa Zulu Natal and southern Lesotho, the Mehloding Trail takes you on a path of rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage.

The quaint and welcoming town of Matatiele, 70km from Kokstad forms the perfect gateway to the trail, half way between Underberg and Rhodes.

The route traverses spectacular mountainous foothills and rural villages, taking in visits to ancient rock-art, sparkling streams, indigenous trees, medicinal plants, craft projects and top of the world views.
